Qld premier tours drought stricken towns

The Queensland premier is touring drought-hit communities in western Queensland to get a first-hand view of the crisis they are facing.

Annastacia Palaszczuk spent Tuesday afternoon inspecting a crippled property at Charleville before dining with mayors and councillors, who told her of the plight of the many farmers hit by several failed wet seasons.

The premier hopes the tour will help her determine what the government can do to keep farming families on the land.

"We just need to make sure that in the future they stay here, and their farms will prosper," she told the ABC.

The premier will announce funding to rebuild a Charleville bridge that was seriously damaged when a truck loaded with chemicals exploded on the Mitchell Highway in September last year.

She'll then head to Longreach and Barcaldine to meet with drought affected farmers there.

Education Minister Kate Jones is travelling with the premier, and a funding announcement for the School of Distance Education is also expected.
