Queensland's premier won't say whether the government would consider implementing fixed three-year parliamentary terms if its first choice fails.

A state referendum on Saturday will ask Queenslanders whether they want MPs to serve fixed four-year parliamentary terms instead of the current non-fixed three-year model.

"The government is firmly focused on the referendum this week, which is about four-year fixed terms and I urge all Queenslanders to get behind this referendum and vote yes," Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said on Wednesday when asked whether the fixed three-year terms would be considered if the the referendum failed.

A referendum doesn't need to be held for parliament to fix parliamentary terms - only to increase their length.
