Queensland premier faces electoral oblivion: poll

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman faces electoral oblivion in his own seat, a new poll suggests.

The ReachTEL poll, taken yesterday in Mr Newman's Brisbane electorate of Ashgrove, shows primary support for him sitting at just 36.6 per cent.

Speculation is rising that Kate Jones, who lost the seat to Mr Newman at the 2012 election, will again run for Labor in Ashgrove.

The party has reportedly registered the internet domain name katejones.com.au.

Even though Ms Jones has not put her hand up, her primary support has risen to 51.1 per cent, according to the poll, which was commissioned by the Together union.

Together secretary Alex Scott says there has been a dramatic collapse in support for the premier since the Redcliffe by-election in February.

He says the only way Mr Newman will avoid electoral oblivion is to change his policies.

"Campbell Newman fundamentally needs to change the direction of this government if they're not going to face electoral oblivion next year," he told reporters outside state parliament.

"He's doomed unless he changes his behaviour.

"If the ALP runs Kate Jones, she will walk this election in."

ReachTEL conducted the poll via telephone with 690 Ashgrove residents selected at random.

Comment has been sought from Mr Newman.
