Qld mayor set for weekend behind bars

Suspended Logan mayor Luke Smith is facing a weekend behind bars after being arrested and charged with assault.

Smith was charged after police attended a home at Meadowbrook, south of Brisbane, following reports of a disturbance at around 8am on Friday.

It's understood the home belongs to a family member of Smith.

The 48-year-old was later charged with assault, obstructing police and wilful damage and taken to the Beenleigh Watchhouse.

Smith is expected to stay in custody until Monday when he'll appear at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court.

In May, Smith was suspended from his mayor's role with the Logan City Council after being charged by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) with perjury and corruption offences.

Smith has previously stated he will vigorously defend the allegations.

The CCC have said Friday's arrest is unrelated to their investigation into allegations of corruption within the Logan City Council.
