Qld mayor seeks $150k in defamation suit

A Queensland mayor is seeking $150,000 in damages from a political opponent he says defamed him on Facebook.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale filed the defamation suit against failed mayoral candidate Gary Duffy and his wife Cornelia Turni in Brisbane's Supreme Court on Thursday.

The 43-page claim refers to 13 Facebook posts, which Mr Pisasale alleges are defamatory as they carry imputations that he was dishonest, untrustworthy and involved in money laundering.

The claim states he is seeking damages to vindicate his reputation and compensate him for the distress and embarrassment caused by the Facebook posts.

"These publications have caused damage to the plaintiff in both his personal and professional reputations, has caused substantial hurt, distress and embarrassment to the plaintiff and his family," it reads.

Mr Pisasale is seeking general damages of $100,000 and $50,000 in aggravated compensatory damages.

He is also seeking an injunction to restrain Mr Duffy and Ms Turni, and their agents, from continuing to publish defamatory material.

Mr Pisasale was re-elected as Ipswich mayor after receiving 83 per cent of the vote in Saturday's poll compared to Mr Duffy's nine per cent.
