Qld man in court over hammer attack

A man accused of using a hammer to fracture his partner's skull has appeared in a far north Queensland court charged with attempted murder.

Police allege Tony Zuvela, 41, assaulted the woman at the couple's home in the Cairns suburb of Bentley Park in the early hours of November 7.

The woman suffered head and torso injuries and was taken to Cairns Base Hospital in a stable condition.

A hospital spokeswoman said the woman was released on Monday.

Police couldn't confirm reports the woman was asleep when the alleged attack happened.

Zuvela did not enter a plea when he appeared briefly in the Cairns Magistrates Court charged with attempted murder.

He was remanded in custody and the case was adjourned until January 14.
