A 40-year-old homeless man has appeared in Beenleigh Magistrates Court charged with murdering a stranger in a Brisbane street.

Emergency crews were called to Woodridge on Friday morning and found 50-year-old Steven Church with critical head, neck and chest injuries.

He later died in hospital.

Beenleigh man Paul John Conoley appeared briefly in court on Monday where the matter was adjourned for mention on May 1.

Police said Church, a grandfather of eight, had never met Conoley before the attack at the intersection of Defiance and North roads at Woodridge.

The Church family said Steven would be sadly missed.

"Words cannot adequately express our grief and sorrow at losing Stef, a son, a brother, an uncle, father to four sisters, and perhaps the saddest of all a beloved poppy to eight young children," the family said in a statement to the Seven Network.
