Qld links MPs' raises to public servants

Queensland politicians won't receive salary increases at a rate higher than those of public servants under new laws.

The state government passed new laws on Wednesday night stipulating MP pay increases determined by the Queensland Independent Remuneration Tribunal cannot be proportionately greater than those awarded to public sector workers.

"We made a commitment during the election to ensure pay rises for politicians were limited to those of public servants - this is about delivering on our election commitments," Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told parliament.

"We believe that when it comes to members' salaries, they should not be able to be increased by a rate higher than that applying to public sector employees."

But Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said there was no point keeping the tribunal if the new laws could lead to it being overruled.

"You either do it or you do not," he told parliament.

"I do not particularly have a problem with linking it to public servants, but let us not have the facade of having an independent tribunal."

The Parliament and Other Legislation Amendment Act also made the Speaker responsible for the Committee of the Legislative Assembly and increases power and independence of the role.
