Queensland crane driver not guilty of hit-and-run

A Queensland Rail worker has been found not guilty after a mobile crane he was driving struck a woman crossing an inner-Brisbane street, leaving her seriously injured.

Andre-Shane Moorby, 60, was accused of driving a Pettibone crane dangerously in October 2017, causing grievous bodily harm to Iuliana Stevenson, then fleeing in the vehicle.

Ms Stevenson was left with fractures to her spine and upper body, as well as lacerations and abrasions following the incident.

Mr Moorby was today found not guilty in the Brisbane District Court.

Prosecutors alleged he failed to keep a proper lookout for her as he turned his heavy-duty vehicle left onto Hamilton Place and Campbell Street in Bowen Hills after his red arrow went out.

Ms Stevenson was crossing at the light when she was hit.

She has no memory of the incident and did not give evidence during the trial.

The Crown alleged Mr Moorby's offending was aggravated by him fleeing despite knowing Ms Stevenson had been hit.

CCTV footage played for the jury shows him stopping his vehicle briefly after he hit her before driving off.

In a police interview, the 35-year rail worker denied being inattentive but said a "blind spot" from the driver's seat meant "I don't really see too much."

"Really, I can't tell you anything about this," he said.

"I don't know where she was or anything. I really don't know where she's come from."

He said he was driving the crane, which is used to handle rail tracks, to return it to a depot at Bowen Hills at the end of his shift.

Outside court, Mr Moorby's lawyer Andrew Wiseman said it wasn't a case of dangerous driving but a dangerous vehicle, which has since been scrapped by Queensland Rail.

"We're glad Ms Stevenson is making a full recovery," he told reporters.

"(Mr Moorby) is relieved she's OK and on the mend."

"It's been a traumatic 18 months for him and everyone else involved," Mr Wiseman said.

Mr Moorby indicated with his hands that he was too emotional to speak to the media.
