Qld govt wants more indigenous homeowners

Queensland's government wants to encourage indigenous home ownership to make remote councils more independent.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt says increasing home ownership is the goal of all the indigenous mayors he held talks with on Palm Island on Thursday.

Mr Pitt says a rise will benefit residents, councils, and the state and federal governments.

Remote councils will be able to increase their income from ratepayers, and become more financially sustainable and independent, he says.

"The more homeowners in indigenous communities, the better it will be for councils," Mr Pitt told AAP.

"The funding balance will change to more local funding as opposed to state and federal funding."
