Qld premier calls for more federal funding

Queensland's premier has called on Malcolm Turnbull to stump up more federal funding for infrastructure projects like Brisbane's Cross River Rail.

Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday welcomed Mr Turnbull's Smart Cities announcement, which will aim to make jobs, schools and services accessible to city dwellers within a 30-minute timeframe.

However, Ms Palaszczuk said the federal government's initial funding proposal of $50 million was not "anywhere near enough".

"It looks like just a little bit of business case planning in the first instance," she said.

"What we do need to see is more money on the table for projects such as Cross River Rail."

Ms Palaszczuk said the project was "very much needed" and co-operation between both tiers of government was critical to ensuring its success.

The premier said she supported one of the key ideas of the Smart Cities initiative, to encourage private investors to help fund large infrastructure projects.

"It is not new to other parts of the world," she said.

"It is a great concept and it is something we need to work together on."

Ms Palaszczuk said her minority Labor government would work with its federal counterparts on the project to work out where "value sharing" could be achieved at transport hubs across Queensland.
