Qld govt may open up remote flight sector

The Queensland government will consider opening the aviation sector to more competition to make it cheaper to fly to remote indigenous communities.

The government intends to trial subsidised flights into Cape York and review the operation of other remote routes to find ways to lower airfares.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt plans to talk with airlines about the viability of their existing remote routes and compare the prices of different fares.

He says the government will consider opening the sector to more competition and any other solution to bring down prices.

"The government must have an open mind about the possible solutions," he told AAP.

Operations of flights on remote routes have traditionally been awarded via a tender process, but the treasurer says a business-as-usual approach sometimes does not work and change is needed.

"We need to broaden our horizons and listen to what the communities themselves are saying," Mr Pitt said.
