Queensland Justice Philip McMurdo has been promoted to Court of Appeal judge in the state Labor government's latest round of judicial appointments.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said Justice McMurdo had extensive experience and would be welcomed by both the legal profession and his colleagues on the bench.

Justice McMurdo had been critical of the former Newman government's process of choosing judges like his wife, Court of Appeal president Margaret McMurdo, following the controversial appointment of Tim Carmody as chief justice.

Ms D'Ath also announced Michael Roderick Byrne QC had been appointed as Director of Public Prosecutions.
