Qld government remains up in the air

THE STATE OF PLAY IN QUEENSLAND

* Premier Campbell Newman has resigned after 11 days of vote counting, but will remain caretaker premier until a new one is appointed.

* Governor Paul de Jersey will commission a new premier, either LNP leader Lawrence Springborg or Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk, after all seats are declared, possibly on Friday or Saturday.

HOW THE HOUSE CURRENTLY SHAPES UP

* Labor has 44 seats, including Ferny Grove, and the support of Independent Peter Wellington, giving it the 45 seats needed to form a minority government in the 89-seat parliament.

* The LNP is set to claim 42 seats, and hopes to also have the support of the two Katter's Australian Party MPs.

FERNY GROVE COULD BE DECISIVE

* The Court of Disputed Returns will decide whether to cancel Labor's victory in Ferny Grove and order a by-election after the Palmer United Party candidate was ruled ineligible as an undisclosed bankrupt.

* If a by-election is called, it's unlikely to be held until mid-April at the earliest.

* If the LNP wins a by-election, both parties will have 43 seats. The government will be decided by the support of crossbenchers - Wellington would give Labor 44, while the two KAP members are expected to side with the LNP, giving it 45.
