Qld fire 'may threaten homes'

Residents are being warned they may need to evacuate as firefighters work to control a large bushfire southwest of the Gold Coast.

Police say a large fire is burning in a rural area of the Bonogin Valley between Smith Road and Tourmaline Street.

"The fire has potential to threaten properties along Tourmaline Street and adjacent roads," police said on Friday afternoon.

Residents are being warned they may need to evacuate and are being told to prepare by dousing their homes with water.

A command post has been established at the intersection of Carrington Road and Chesterfield Drive.
