Qld farmers hopeful on backpacker tax

Queensland fruit farmers are hopeful the federal political stalemate over the backpacker tax is almost over.

Pinata Farms managing director Gavin Scurr said the industry wants the proposed 15 per cent tax rate to pass parliament in the coming days.

"It's just dragged out for far too long, so we're (Queensland fruit farmers) really hopeful that the 15 per cent proposal gets through," he told AAP on Tuesday.

Mr Scurr said the uncertainty surrounding the establishment of the tax had been a huge concern for farmers across Queensland.

He said the original proposal of a 32 per cent rate would have been unsustainable and deterred backpackers from working on Australian farms.
