Worshippers mark Good Friday in Brisbane

Good Friday reminds us there's more to the human story than rampant violence, Brisbane's Catholic Archbishop says.

Worshippers gathered at the Cathedral of St Stephen in the CBD for a Stations of the Cross service just days after the Belgian city of Brussels was rocked by terror attacks.

"There is more to the human story than all the violence of the world that we seem to drown in," Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane Mark Coleridge said.

"That's what today is about - there's something more than the violence."

He said the timing of the recent bombings - which killed at least 31 people and wounded about 270 - was "almost uncanny".

The suffering of victims was echoed in the story of Jesus Christ being crucified, he said.

Asylum seekers making the perilous journey to Australia, domestic violence victims and those affected by sexual abuse could also find hope in the Christian message.

But the archbishop said the occasion also acknowledged the presence of evil and "rubs our nose in it".

His comments echo those of his Adelaide and Melbourne counterparts, who used their Easter messages to offer prayers and appeal for those afflicted by "senseless violence" in Belgium and refugees fleeing conflict respectively.

"At times the world does seem like a hopeless place," Archbishop Coleridge said.

"But there is a hope that is borne out of hopelessness."
