Queensland duo jailed over toolbox attack

Bashed with a golf club and locked in a toolbox overnight, attack victim Luke Hood's only crime had been to invite a woman to stay over.

Mr Hood's 2013 invitation to acquaintance Nichole Joyce Berg, 39, was interpreted as a proposition for sex and prompted a vicious and bizarre assault by Berg and her jealous lover Glenn John Walker, the Brisbane Supreme Court heard.

Mr Hood, 30, was ambushed in a shed at his Anstead property west of Brisbane in July 2013.

Crown prosecutor Phil McCarthy said Berg watched on while Walker, 41, bashed Mr Hood with his fists and a golf club.

Walker tied his victim's hands and feet with duct tape before locking him in a large metal toolbox and putting a second toolbox on top.

The couple then ransacked the house and stole TVs, computers and jewellery.

Mr Hood was found by friends the next morning who heard a noise in the shed.

"They located a large toolbox underneath the workbench and they noted that something, to use their words, was sticking out - Mr Hood's hand as he tried to prise open the lid," Mr McCarthy said.

A distressed Mr Hood was treated in hospital for serious injuries, including a broken jaw.

The terrifying ordeal had had a lasting effect on him, his statement to the court said.

Justice David Boddice said there was no evidence Mr Hood had propositioned Berg, and that she may have misunderstood him.

The pair pleaded guilty to charges including carrying out a malicious act with intent and burglary and stealing.

Walker also pleaded guilty to a string of unrelated offences, the most serious being a vigilante tomahawk attack on a man he believed was selling drugs to teenagers.

Justice Boddice denounced his "persistent" criminal conduct and sentenced him to 10 years' jail, and Berg to six.

The judge said there had been no legitimate basis for the act of retribution on Mr Hood.

"You went out and exacted revenge on this person in a despicable way," he said.
