Qld drivers warned to buckle up their kids

Almost 2400 Queenslanders were fined for failing to properly buckle children into cars last year, including 95 involving infants under six months old.

The state's peak motoring body, the RACQ, said it was disturbed by the 2016 statistics.

Most fines were issued in north Queensland where 727 drivers were caught, according to figures published on Wednesday.

Of the 2397 fines across the state, 454 drivers from the southeast region failed to correctly restrain passengers under 16.

"We probably believe that number is much higher for those who are doing it and not getting caught," spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said.

Ms Ritchie warned that drivers caught with unrestrained children could be fined up to $378 and lose three points from their licence.

"It's horrifying to think about what can happen if they're in a crash," she said.
