A five-year-old girl has been mauled by her family dog on the Sunshine Coast.

The little girl was taken to hospital suffering bite wounds after being attacked at Beerwah on Thursday morning.

The dog, a great dane-cross neapolitan mastiff, has since been surrendered to the Sunshine Coast Council to be put down.

The girl was taken to Nambour Hospital in a stable condition with bite a wound to her chest.

The attack happened on private property and the dog had not been classified as dangerous before the attack, a council spokeswoman told AAP.

"Really the message from council ... is that dogs can act unpredictably and must be under control at all times," she said.

"Obviously it was a family pet and the enclosure on the property was very good, it was very well contained."
