Qld cyclone victims short-changed: Byrne

Queensland's government claims disaster victims have been short-changed by the commonwealth.

Agriculture Minister and Rockhampton MP Bill Byrne says the federal government is not contributing 50/50 to disaster assistance funding for central Queensland after category five Cyclone Marcia tore through in March.

The state has requested $198.5 million in Category D funding, but he says the federal government has only agreed to stump $27.75 million.

"It's a real slap in the face to local families and businesses that had their lives torn apart by an extreme natural disaster," Mr Byrne said in a statement.

"The Abbott government is essentially telling Central Queenslanders they're on their own."

The minister said the federal government hadn't agreed to grant "a single cent" of the $78.5 million requested by the Rockhampton and Livingstone councils for big projects to kick-start their economies.

He said it wasn't unusual for such projects to receive federal funding and called for the Abbott government to change its stance.
