Qld braced for deluge from ex-cyclone

Far north Queensland is braced for a deluge as ex-cyclone Ann crosses the coast.

The tropical low is expected to generate wind gusts of about 90km/h from Wednesday morning, between Cape Grenville, near the tip of Queensland, and Port Douglas, north of Cairns.

Winds are expected to ease as the system moves across Cape York Peninsula later on Wednesday but coastal communities have been warned they could get heavy rain with the potential to cause flash flooding.

At 5am the weather system was about 380km north of Cairns and tracking towards the coast.

A separate area of heavy rainfall is expected further south on Wednesday.

This could cause flash flooding along the coast and ranges between about Gordonvale and Ingham on Wednesday morning, before easing on Thursday.
