A young boy on an electric scooter has suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a truck on the Sunshine Coast.

The eight-year-old was hit when he left the footpath and rode on to Indigo Road in Caloundra West about 9.45am (AEST) on Friday.

He was taken to the Caloundra Hospital in a serious condition, the Queensland Ambulance Service said.

Police said his injuries were potentially life threatening.

He was later airlifted to Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the truck was being interviewed by the forensic crash unit and undergoing routine drug and breath testing.

The boy's mother was in the area at the time but it was unclear if she saw the accident, police said.
