Qld believers gather to mark Easter Sunday

Christian worshippers have turned out in droves to mark Easter Sunday in Brisbane, as religious leaders urge them to stave off fear and absorb the hopeful message of the resurrection.

Followers were forced to stand at the entrance and line the walls of St Stephen's cathedral for Sunday morning's solemn mass, as the sound of choral music echoed in the packed church.

A hoarse Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane Mark Coleridge apologised in advance for the less pleasant sound of "a few croaked hallelujahs" on his part.

"But nothing can quench the joy of this day ... Jesus Christ has risen from the dead," he told the congregation.

Meanwhile, Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane Phillip Aspinall said the hopeful message of the Easter story was a helpful antidote to fear and anxiety.

He said the good weather boded well for attendance numbers at St John's Cathedral, having anticipated a crowd of a few hundred for the Good Friday service.

"(Easter is) about God launching a huge repair project in the world as we know it," Dr Aspinall said.

The story of the resurrection also reminded followers trials such as Cyclone Debbie and the threat of conflict could be overcome, he said.

"There's no shortage of suffering in the world. But Easter has a different message, it says that those things do not enslave us," he said.
