PUP candidate slams LNP spending promises

The Liberal National Party is buying votes in the Queensland election at the expense of the state's assets, a Palmer United Party candidate says.

Blair Brewster, the PUP candidate for Albert on the northern end of the Gold Coast, says hefty election promises - including the multimillion-dollar upgrade of a notorious motorway exit in the electorate he is contesting - come with a warning.

"They're promising all these upgrades but only if you vote for them and only if they sell assets," Mr Brewster said.

"We've accumulated assets now for 150 years. We don't want to sell those assets.

"They're taking the cheapest and the easiest option just to buy votes."

The LNP is seeking a second term in government on the back of its plan to long-term lease about $37 billion worth of state-owned assets.

Gold Coast PUP candidates were joined by federal Senator Glenn Lazarus on Wednesday to announce a policy to extend the region's light rail system to the proposed Coomera Town Centre.

Mr Brewster said their plan made more sense than upgrading the roundabout and would including connecting light rail to the region's theme parks.

He also dismissed speculation that PUP policies were irrelevant given the party's minority status in the election.

"We'll hold the balance of power," Mr Brewster said. "A lot of people are undecided.

"Everyone wrote us off at the federal election. We're still here."
