Public transport overhaul in southeast Qld

HOW SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND'S PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM IS CHANGING NEXT YEAR:

* 23 zones reduced to eight

* Fare reductions across all zones

* Single fares to reduce between 15 cents and $3.19 depending on route travelled

* Average journey $1.54 cheaper

* Travel in Zone 1, which encompasses the previous Zone 2, in peak time to drop to $3.20

* Children under 15 to travel free on weekends

* Peak period to start after 6am, rather than 3am, to encourage earlier travel

* The 20 per cent off-peak travel discount to apply for all travel between 7pm and 6am, and 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday, and all weekend

* The "nine and free" scheme to be replaced with a system where travel is half-price after eight trips

* Concessional fares for jobseekers on Newstart or Youth Allowance and asylum seekers

* Seniors and pensioners to retain their discounts
