Public servants rally in Qld's far north

Public servants will rally in Queensland's north in a bid to put jobs at the forefront of the state election campaign.

Members of the Community and Public Sector Union will take to the streets in Cairns and Townsville on Friday, as the union prepares to ramp up its campaign to protect public service jobs.

Spokeswoman Lisa Newman says the two cities are being targeted because they have high unemployment.

"When you're looking at two towns that have unemployment rates that are well in excess of the state average, we know and communities understand what the real value of ongoing, secure permanent work is," she told AAP.

Ms Newman said an election commitment by Queensland's Liberal National Party to employ thousands of extra doctors, nurses and health staff was good news.

"However, it doesn't make up for the damage that has been done to the public service by the Newman government," she said.

Queenslanders go to the polls on January 31.
