Proposed changes to Qld DV laws

Queensland's government wants to make it easier to stop domestic violence abusers returning to live at the home they shared with their victim.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says a law change is being considered that would make it mandatory for magistrates to consider excluding perpetrators from their home so that victims can remain living there.

"Women and children experiencing violence are often forced to flee; leaving work, homes, schools and their community to escape a violent partner," she said in a statement.

Minister for Women and Communities Shannon Fentiman said the proposed change to the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 had the potential to reduce homelessness.

"Simply being able to continue their friendship and support networks, or their childrens' schooling makes a huge difference to the wellbeing of victims of violence," she said.

So-called ouster conditions were only considered in about one in three domestic violence cases over the past three years.
