Pollution meeting to be held in Brisbane

Air pollution monitoring and its shortcomings in Queensland will be on the agenda at a Brisbane meeting of health experts, lawyers and community groups.

Environmental Justice Australia (EJA) has raised concerns about a lack of pollution monitoring in the entire central Queensland coalfields.

The region of more than one million square kilometres contained more than half of the country's 20 most polluting coal mines, the group said.

"Queensland's current system of air pollution laws and regulations is failing to ensure healthy air," said Environmental Defenders Office Queensland lawyer Revel Pointon.

"Having endorsed new national air pollution standards in December, Queensland Environment Minister Steven Miles has a responsibility to ensure these standards are met in the most polluted parts of the state."

The meeting will hear from EJA representatives, along with Dr David King from Doctors for the Environment Australia and resident Paul Stephenson, who lives close to the Baralaba coal load-out facility in Central Queensland.
