Man shot dead by police on Gold Coast 'was armed robbery suspect'

Police on the Gold Coast have shot a man dead after he lunged at officers with a knife.

Two dog squad officers were forced to open fire on the man after he came at them following reports of a disturbance at Nakina Street in Southport just after 7pm.

Witnesses reported hearing three to four gunshots and voices yelling "get down, get down" as they rang out.

Police said the victim, believed to be 32, went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene despite attempts to perform CPR.

The Courier Mail reports the man was a suspect in an armed robbery, and the dog squad and Rapid Action and Patrols Group had responded to the disturbance call.

The Ethical Standards Command will investigate the circumstances of the shooting, and it will be overviewed by the State Coroner and Crime and Corruption Commission.

It is the third fatal shooting in Queensland in the past week, with a 51-year-old man shot dead on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday night.

On November 18 Laval Zimmer confronted officers with a knife at his home in Kippa-Ring, just north of Brisbane, after making multiple phone calls to police.

He was shot in the chest and died at the scene.

The head of Queensland's police union said there was "nothing to hide" and that a coronial inquiry into the shootings would be welcomed.

"If the coroner wants to look at all these instances together that is his decision and we will support that," Ian Leavers, President of the Queensland Police Union, told reporters at the scene.

"We have nothing to hide and I'm confident that our police will be vindicated at the end of the day."
