Accused murderer Daniel Heazlewood may have identified several bushland sites as the burial place of his mother Linda Sidon, but police are yet to discover her body.

A day-long search of a small area of the Numinbah Valley in the Gold Coast hinterland on Thursday failed to uncover any trace of Ms Sidon, who has been missing since 2009.

Heazlewood took detectives to the remote site on Wednesday following an interview and identified several locations for where Ms Sidon's body might have been buried.

The 28-year-old faced Southport Magistrates Court earlier this month charged with his mother's murder.

Despite his assistance, a team of forensic officers and an excavator failed to retrieve any items of interest on Thursday.

The search will resume on Friday afternoon.

Detective Inspector Dave Hutchinson said police were "reasonably confident" of finding Ms Sidon's body but he wouldn't comment on whether Heazlewood's assistance indicated he'd confessed to the crime.

"I can't go into any great detail about what was said because the matter is now before the court," Det Insp Hutchinson said.

"Suffice to say he did accompany us here and he did indicate some areas."

Ms Sidon's disappearance was first treated as a likely suicide given her history of anxiety, anorexia and depression.

New information given to police earlier this year altered that view and an initial search of the Numinbah Valley in August was conducted.

Heazlewood was arrested and charged just a day after forensic teams had searched the government housing unit he had shared with his New Zealand-born mother.

After a brief court appearance last week, barrister Chris Rosser said Heazlewood would contest the charges and that the police case was circumstantial.
