Hit-run police officer Peter McAulay moved out of ICU

A young Queensland police officer who spent several days fighting for life following a horror hit-run has shown incredible improvement and is set to be moved out of the intensive care unit.

Constable Peter McAulay, 24, was hit and dragged for several metres last Thursday morning, while he was trying to stop a stolen car in Booval, Ipswich.

Const McAulay was placed in an induced coma at the Princess Alexandra hospital but a week on, after several life-saving surgeries, his condition has improved to "stable".

A police source said the officer was now "talking sense".

He suffered horrific head injuries as well as broken bones during the incident.

The Goodna constable, who has been an officer for four years, was setting out road spikes trying to stop the stolen Volvo.

The teenage driver is accused of swerving to miss the stingers, instead ploughing into Const McAulay.

A 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy remain in custody charged with attempted murder.

Their case is due back in court in November.
