Planning, units the solution: Qld premier

Queensland's premier believes more units and residential estates will solve the nation's housing affordability crisis.

The issue of rising house prices, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, has been in the spotlight after federal Treasurer Joe Hockey suggested first home buyers should get better jobs if they want to get into the market.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk believes the crisis will be stemmed by more planned communities and natural growth in the number of unit dwellings.

"We will see more growth in units as well, but we will also see a mixture, in these newly planned residential estates ... of affordable housing," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk took the opportunity to take a swipe at Mr Hockey over his comments.

"People out there are doing it tough, it is very hard for people to save money to buy their first home and his comments just show how out of touch he is," she said.
