Pizza shop rampage ends in offshore arrest

A man accused of trashing a pizza restaurant and hurling furniture at diners has been arrested on a rocky outcrop in the sea north of Brisbane.

Police say the man went on a bizarre rampage at the Clontarf business just before 6pm on Monday, threatening a worker with a knife, cutting the phone line she was using to take an order and throwing things at her.

It's alleged he also hurled a stool into the kitchen while yelling at staff, pulled a screen off a wall and smashed a glass bench top.

He then walked outside, where he threw a chair at a diner, cutting the 23-year-old victim's arm, police say.

Negotiators had to be called in after the man fled along the Hornibrook Esplanade and waded about 75 metres offshore where he perched on a cluster of rocks.

Officers had to enter the water to convince him to come out, with the drama ending in a soggy arrest.

The 26-year-old man is facing eight charges including assault, going armed to cause fear and wilful damage.

He spent the night in custody and will face the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The man who was hit in the arm with the chair received stitches in hospital but is recovering.
