A Gold Coast personal trainer has been charged with administering a dangerous drug following the death of his client three months ago.

The 28-year-old supplied the man with a fentanyl patch to help overcome an injury on March 27 but the 20-year-old was unable to be revived the next morning, police say.

He died more than three weeks later in a Gold Coast Hospital.
