Man, 70, dead after truck collision

A 70-year-old man has died after his car collided head-on with a truck near Cairns.

The man was travelling with a female passenger, also 70, when their small vehicle hit the truck on Monday morning.

He died at the scene.

The woman was airlifted to the Cairns Base Hospital in a stable condition with moderate chest injuries.

The driver of the truck was uninjured.

It comes after another person was killed in a fiery car crash west of Brisbane.

That vehicle hit a power pole in Ipswich in the early hours of Monday morning, before bursting into flames.

The two deaths bring the state's toll to 74 for this year so far.
