Flights into and out of Brisbane have been delayed after thick fog blanketed the city and other parts of southeast Queensland.

The fog has slowed operations at Brisbane Airport, while early morning Brisbane River ferry services were put on hold before resuming about 8.30am.

Motorists too faced challenging journeys, with visibility particularly bad on Brisbane's bayside on Monday morning.

Some commuters had to contend with visibility of less than 30 metres around dawn.

Heavy fog was also reported at Ipswich and in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane, and the Scenic Rim area, west of the Gold Coast.

By about 8.30am, the fog had lifted in the Brisbane CBD.
