A man is being interviewed by police after a young boy was rescued from a car at a Brisbane shopping centre as the city sweltered through a heatwave.

The sleeping child was first noticed by a woman in the underground car park at New Farm about 1.30pm on Sunday as temperatures were reaching the mid-30s.

Police removed the boy via an unlocked door and put him inside an air condtioned patrol vehicle to cool down before taking him to Lady Cilento Hospital as a precaution.

Parents have been urged to never leave children unattended in vehicles, particularly in the current severe heatwave conditions being experienced in southern parts of Queensland.

Paramedics were called to 36 heat-related incidents on Saturday, including 11 each in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

A dog also died after it was left tied to a clothes line without water.
