A woman has died and three other people have been taken to hospital after a plane crashed on a central Queensland beach.

The tourist plane went down on Middle Island, near the town of 1770, about 10.30am on Tuesday.

A female passenger, reportedly a backpacker, died at the scene of the crash, which emergency services had difficulty accessing.

A 29-year-old woman was flown to Rockhampton Hospital with suspected head injuries and a possible broken leg along with a 13-year-old boy with a possible leg fracture.

The pilot, a man in his 60s, suffered cuts and leg injuries and was taken to Bundaberg Hospital.

The crash was witnessed by passengers on a second tourist plane, which was able to land safely on the same stretch of sand.

Shocked passengers raised the alarm using their mobile phones.

"There were two planes. One was following the other and has seen the first go down," ambulance service spokeswoman Mindy Thomas said.

"We had direct information from the scene at all times."
