NRL agent in court over fatal pub fight

A disparaging quip about the attractiveness of local women allegedly set off a Queensland pub fight that left one man dead and a NRL player agent on manslaughter charges.

Paul Bruce Sutton has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter over the death of Shaun Miles in May 2013 in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday.

It's alleged he hoisted the former bush jockey off the ground before dropping him onto the hard cement floor after they got into a fight at a Kingaroy hotel that night.

The force of the drop caused a skull fracture to the back of Mr Miles' head, and his eventual death, crown prosecutor Belinda Merrin told the court.

Tensions had risen after Mr Miles thought he heard Sutton make a disparaging comment about the attractiveness of local women, Ms Merrin said.

She said this earned this rebuke from Mr Miles: "Don't call our women ugly!"

Things escalated when the pair later met again at a separate part of the hotel.

Sighting Sutton again, the crown said Mr Miles called him "that scumbag", put down his drink and swung at the Sydney-based agent.

Sutton then grabbed the 43-year-old and lifted him, before dropping him to the ground, Ms Merrin said.

She said Sutton used more force than "was reasonably necessary" and, as such, inflicted the skull fracture.

This made Mr Miles' death later that night - only a short distance from his home - a foreseeable possible outcome, the court heard.

In CCTV footage played in court, the physical stoush appeared to happen quickly and left Mr Miles limp and unable to stand unassisted.

Afterwards he was propped up onto his feet, one man retrieved a chair and a crowd gathered around.

A family member gasped and cried as the footage was played.

Sutton is listed on the SFX Sports website as a player agent for NRL stars Kieran Foran, Josh Dugan and Gareth Widdop.
