Nova star fined $750, driving ban for DUI

Troubled radio personality Ash Bradnam says he's "deeply sorry" for drink driving after being slapped with a $750 fine and banned from getting behind the wheel for a further six months.

Bradnam, known for his stints as a host on Nova, pleaded guilty at the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday to driving with a blood alcohol level of between 0.1 and 0.15.

The court heard he'd rammed a parked car on his way back from the local shops on the night of May 23, having gone to buy pizza after cooking efforts at home went awry.

After hitting the car, he continued driving home and was later charged by police.

His lawyer Darren Mahoney said Bradnam was no longer taking the drug Antabuse, which is used to support the treatment of alcoholism by inducing nausea when alcohol is consumed, at the time of the incident.

Magistrate Cathy-Ann McLennan noted the early plea before handing down the fine and driving ban, factoring in the more than three months Bradnam has already been disqualified.

"You have suffered a very public fall from grace," she said.

Outside court, Bradnam said drink driving was a "deplorable" offence he was embarrassed to have committed.

"Through my battle with alcoholism, I've made some bad decisions. I'm deeply sorry," he said.

"But I'm sober, I'm healthy and I'm determined to stay that way."

Mr Mahoney told the court his client would campaign for the effectiveness of Antabuse as part of his ongoing rehabilitation.

This was the 42-year-old's second drink-driving offence following a 2009 charge which led him to be banned from driving for 18 months and sacked by Nova.

He was later reinstated but was suspended after being charged with the most recent offence.

But Magistrate McLennan noted there hadn't been any related offences in the past five years and accepted Bradnam had sincerely tried to rehabilitate himself.
