Notorious prison escapee John Killick released from jail

Notorious NSW prison escapee John Killick has walked free after spending six months behind bars in a Queensland jail.

His release follows months of stalled negotiations with the Queensland Campbell Newman government, after the 77-year-old was last year extradited over an armed robbery committed 32 years ago.

While on parole for the 1983 heist, Killick fled the state and carried out a number of crimes in NSW.

He was captured and spent 15 years in a NSW prison, and upon his release last year, failed in a Supreme Court legal bid to avoid extradition.

Despite being downgraded to low security during his sentence in NSW, Killick was tagged high risk in Queensland and areas such as the prison oval were strictly out of bounds.

Killick gained international notoriety after former girlfriend Lucy Dudko hijacked a helicopter at gunpoint and helped him escape Silverwater prison in 1999.

The pair spent 45 days on the run before they were arrested.

Dudko served seven years for her role in the escape.

They exchanged more than 4000 letters during the course of her incarceration but their relationship ended when she told him she had devoted the rest of her life to God.
