No charges in Qld council corruption case

Council workers in far north Queensland accused of corruptly awarding contracts are no longer facing the prospect of criminal charges.

That's despite the state's corruption watchdog finding some received gifts from contractors.

The Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has decided not pursue any criminal charges against Cook Shire Council employees after completing an investigation into the matter.

The watchdog received a complaint last September claiming contracts were corruptly awarded to certain companies after receiving gifts or benefits from those same companies.

"In some instances the CCC established that council employees did receive gifts or benefits from contractors but found no or insufficient evidence to suggest those council employees corruptly awarded contracts in return for receiving those gifts or benefits," the watchdog said in a statement issued on Thursday.

The council had introduced a number of new policies and procedures aimed at improving such issues, the CCC added.
