Queensland no body, no parole laws 'fixed'

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath has introduced a no body, no parole bill in Queensland's parliament, two weeks after the opposition pushed for similar legislation.

The changes will mean murderers who haven't identified the location of their victims bodies won't be released without serving maximum time.

The LNP held up the passage of broader reforms this month to introduce their own no body, no parole bill.

But Ms D'Ath claimed that legislation was "sloppy" and had to be reworked so it could be properly implemented.

"In particular, the way the term 'offence of murder' has been drafted (in the LNP's bill) actually forgets to include the actual Criminal Code offence of murder," she said on Tuesday.

"It is reflective of the sloppy and lazy approach of those opposite that in a model apparently about no body, no parole they forgot to include the actual offence of murder in their definition or, in fact, link the model to finding a body."

Ms D'Ath also said the laws as drafted by the LNP would not have acted retrospectively, meaning existing cases wouldn't have been covered by new laws.

Opposition police spokesman Tim Mander interjected a number of times as the bill was introduced, saying it was only the LNP's bill which had prompted the Labor government to act on the issue.

A no body, no parole law was one of the key recommendations of the Sofronoff Review into the state's parole system, sparked by the killing of 81-year-old grandmother Elizabeth Kippin in her Townsville home last July allegedly by a man paroled hours earlier.

It's now been referred to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee to report back later this year.

Other parole reform laws passed the house later on Tuesday included streamlining Queensland's three parole boards into one, with a full-time president and staff.
