Former Queensland premier Campbell Newman has apologised to the furious family of a Queensland mother killed by a bus in Brisbane after he complained about a resulting traffic jam.

Anne Marie Stent, 51, died when she was hit by a bus in the CBD on Tuesday and soon afterwards, Mr Newman used Twitter to complain that police had essentially "shut down the entire northside of Brisbane".

"I'm deeply sorry that I've caused the family that sort of hurt and I apologise to them. That was not my intention," Mr Newman has told News Corp.

He plans to write a letter of apology to the family.

He also revealed that he had met Mrs Stent on three occasions through her work at a law firm.

Mrs Stent's sister Caroline Clair said Mr Newman's comments on Twitter disgusted her.

"If it was his daughter, I bet dollars to doughnuts he would have demanded they close the entire road. He has absolutely no respect," she told News Corp.
