Families left with no homes following construction company collapse

A Queensland single mother has shared her heartbreak of being left out of pocket and without a home after a building company's collapse.

Felicity Cameron told 9News former Queensland building company PlanBuild took her $10,000 deposit amid its soaring debt right before it went into liquidation.

It's left Ms Cameron standing on stones in her empty lot north of Brisbane, with no solution in sight.

"It has been very, very overwhelming, quite distressing for myself and my family. Now I'm left to clean up a mess," Ms Cameron told 9News.

It's a story that is feared will keep repeating, with warnings that Australia's construction boom has the potential to halt.

While the federal government's Homebuilder initiative is fuelling a lot of construction, Australia's weather appears to have tradies working overtime.

Hail damage has roofers in high demand, whilst bushfires have burned through timber supply, making it more scarce and expensive.

The situation has become so concerning that high-level talks are underway with industry groups, the building regulator and the Queensland government looking for a solution.

"We're working really closely with the sector to outline what we expect of homeowners and contractors, but more importantly what we can do to support if things go bad," Queensland Building and Constructing Commissioner Brett Bassett told 9News.

"I'd be asking, 'how many projects does the contractor I'm proposing to use ... how much do they have on at this point in time?'"
