New route for Gold Coast light rail

A cheaper, quicker route for the second stage of the Gold Coast light rail has been revealed as Queensland ramps up efforts to get it finished in time for the Commonwealth Games.

Expressions of interests are being sought for design and construction of the 7.3km alignment, which will connect with Brisbane's train network.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said all three tiers of government would have to fund the project to ensure it was operational for the 2018 games.

She said the new route shaved seven minutes off the previous alignment.

"And importantly, it is possible the new route will be able to be delivered for less than half the cost and within a shortened procurement and construction timeframe," she said.

However, opposition transport spokesman Scott Emerson said the government was rushing the project without planning and funding.

He also criticised Ms Trad for mixing up Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast with Parkwood on the Gold Coast when talking about the light rail project on radio.

"She doesn't know where the stations are going to be, she has no idea," he said.
