New Qld spider named after scientist

One relies on waves to catch its prey, while the other studies waves across the universe to further scientific knowledge.

But both the newly discovered Queensland spider and string theorist Brian Greene share more than a love of waves.

In fact, they share the same name.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced on Tuesday the name of the newly discovered water spider - dolomedes briangreenei - as a homage to Professor Greene, co-founder of the World Science Festival.

Dolomedes briangreenei uses vibrations on the surface of the water to navigate and find prey.

"It's wonderful that this beautiful native spider, which relies on waves for its very survival, has found a namesake in a man who is one of the world's leading experts in exploring and explaining the effects of waves in our universe," Ms Palaszczuk said at the inaugural World Festival Brisbane's launch.

The spider eats fish, frogs and tadpoles, including that of cane toads, meaning it is doing its part to control the notorious Queensland pest.

Ms Palaszczuk said the festival, to run from Tuesday until Saturday, would focus on new ideas, technologies and challenges.

"The festival will take science out of the laboratory and engage Queenslanders in museums, galleries and performing arts venues," she said.

Prof Greene has published bestsellers on topics including parallel universes and a superstring theory, has appeared on numerous talk shows and even made a cameo appearance on US sitcom The Big Bang Theory.

More than 100 scientific luminaries from nine countries will gather for the festival at Brisbane's South Bank.
