Motorists hit hard by Qld Rail fail

Queensland's rail crisis has hit motorists hard, with morning commutes on major motorways in the southeast slowing significantly in October.

The RACQ's latest travel time report revealed commutes on some main roads slowed by as much as 46 per cent.

"With widespread train cancellations last month leading to confusion and delays, it's no surprise commuters were forced back into their cars," RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said.

Congestion increased during the morning peak, with some motorists travelling at an average speed of just 22km/h, Ms Smith said.

Train services in southeast Queensland were plunged into chaos last month when the new Redcliffe Peninsula line opened and there weren't enough drivers to staff it.

Commissioner Phillip Strachan is investigating the train crew shortage, which forced the introduction of an interim timetable with far fewer services.
