Easter road toll rises to seven

A man has died in hospital a day after his car veered off a far-north Queensland road, bringing the national Easter road toll to seven.

It's believed the 20-year-old man was travelling north on the Mulligan Highway, between Cairns and Cooktown, when the vehicle he was in veered off the road just before 8am (AEST) on Good Friday and struck an embankment.

The young man was taken to Cairns Base Hospital but died on Saturday.

The driver of the vehicle, 31, suffered minor injuries.

Earlier on Saturday a 32-year-old man was killed after his ute ran off the road and slammed into a tree in central Queensland.

A motorcyclist in Victoria died on Saturday night when he ran into a tree at 7.30pm in Baxter, in Melbourne's southeast.

The man, who has not been formally identified, died at the scene.

A third man, 28, died in Queensland on Friday afternoon when he lost control of his motorbike and hit a pole at Red Hill, in Brisbane's northwest.

The same afternoon, a two-year-old girl was killed when the ute she was travelling in rolled on the Yorke Peninsula, west of Adelaide.

On the NSW mid-north coast a woman was killed and six others were injured in a head-on collision just south of Macksville, also on Friday afternoon.

The 28-year-old driver of the car she was in has undergone mandatory blood and urine tests while four men in the other car - believed to be French nationals - were taken to hospital.

On Friday morning, a 33-year old male passenger died in Western Australia on Friday morning when his car rolled on the North West Coastal Highway at Meadow.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman, survived and was taken to the Geraldton Hospital.

The Easter road toll stands at seven.
